Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hi,
Methimazole can cause liver damage. Your test results show a mild increase of live enzymes. The enzymes (ALT and AST) are released into the blood from injured liver cells.
Usually, liver injury is mild, temporary and resolves on its own within the initial 3 months of the treatment with methimazole. But methimazole may also cause cholestasis -a more severe condition.
It is impaired secretion of bile from the liver. If you have itchiness, pale stool color or dark urine color or fatigue you should consult with your doctor. Methimazole may be stopped by your doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
