Are Elevated Liver Enzymes In A Person With Mono A Cause For Concern?
My daughter was just diagnosed with mono. The doctor only told me that her liver enzymes are elevated and that she should not participate in sports for one month. My daughter is a dancer and does sit-ups and time on the cross trainer for fun when she s bored. The doctor mentioned something about the possibility of her spleen rupturing but wouldn t give any more information. How much should I restrict her? What signs that would imply complications with her liver or spleen should I watch for? Also, I am caring for my daughter, and I have contact at my job with adults and teens who have Type 1 diabetes. How worried should I be about spreading the virus to them?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Prakruthi's Response
Hi persons with infectious mononucleosis usually tend to have an enlarged liver and spleen. It usually takes a month to three months to subside. It's good to be as careful as possible as the spleen can rupture with seemingly slight pressure. So if you restrict your daughter from dancing for about a month it would be best for her. Sins to watch out for would be: feeling faint, dizzy, loss of consciousness, yellowing of eyes, stomach pain. Also you do not have to worry about passing the virus on at work. I hope this helps you. I wish your daughter a speedy recovery:)
