Are Tenofovir And Atazanavir Advisable For A Suspected HIV Infection After Sex?

Greetings from Singapore, I was possibly exposed to HIV on the 29th of April 2016 with a casual sex worker from vietnam, with the sex involved being unprotected. As such, due to my paranoia from this possible exposure, I went to seek medical attention at the local A&E 22 hours post-exposure. My prescription involved was as followed: (tenofovir, atazanavir: 300mg) (lamivudine:150mg) and (ritonavir: 100mg). Based on the CCC (Clinician Consultation Center), as my prescription involved do not fall under any of the suggested pep regimen, was i possibly given a wrong treatment combination ? If not, how effective is my current regime. P.S. I m finishing my course of medications soon and am soon hitting the 28th day mark. Have already booked a HIV screening follow up with a private clinic. Any insights and thoughts which could shed light on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, thanks for reading this lengthy post. Best regards, Xj

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* Prophylactic HIV medications are not recommended because there are high chances of drug resistance emergence when it is really required.

However, individual case history differs and every clinician has right to decide best of the therapy for his or her patient on medical grounds.

I would like to address further regarding your query with availability of 4th generation HIV test and CD 4 count report.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
