Are Clotrimazole And Nystatin Powder The Right Medications For Fith Disease In Children?
Hi, my 3 yr old grandson was diagnoised with fith disease a week ago. He has the rash but also a really bad rash in his diaper area. he is potty trained so he s not staying moist. The shin is peeling off him and it is really inflamed. Is there anything I can do. The doctor gave him Clotrimazole cream and nystatin powder but they don t seem to be helping. What else can I do?
Welcome to HCM! I really appreciate your concern for your grand son. Nothing to worry it is a self limiting disease which usually does not required Clotrimazole and Nystatin powder. Fifth disease (Erythema infectiosum) is caused by a virus ( Parvovirus 19) that often results in a red rash on the arms, legs, and cheeks. For this reason, it is also known as “slapped cheek disease.” It is fairly common and mild in most children
Treatment is supportive as the infection is frequently self-limiting. You can help the process along by drinking a lot of fluids and getting extra rest. Antipyretics (i.e., fever reducers) are commonly used. The rash is painless and usually does not itch. There is no specific therapy. However, if the treating doctor suspects the possibility of co-existing fungal infection then Clotrimazole and Nystatin powder can be effective.
Best Regards!
