Are COPD, Pneumonia And Weak Kidneys In An Octogenarian A Serious Concern?

Yes, our 83/ going-84 yr old father had been diagnosed of COPD a couple of years ago, plus something with his heart valves. Recently he took multiple trips almost every few weeks the past 3 months to the emergency room and had been last treated for pneumonia. His cardiologist said the previously recommended heart surgery is no longer applicable because his physician had confirmed that my dad s kidneys, etc. may be too weak, and finally the cardiologist reported weakness of or worn out a heart valve or so. Could his organs be showing signs of shutting down and his immunity weakening? What are we to expect in the next few weeks or months, i.e. how long can he continue to live or will he be needing intense care round the clock soon?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on your description, it appears that your dad has been treated mainly for infections.
However, other conditions associated with it could cause health detoriation. The extent of it cannot be predicted just based on your history.
Doctors might not be able to intervene at this stage due to his age and functioning status of his vital organs, which might not sustain procedures and thus might be risk to do that.
If investigations are done related to vital organs like lungs, heart, liver and kidneys, it could be able to tell about the functioning status of them.
Kindly get the necessary investigations done and consult Physician with the report for evaluation and advise.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
