Alcoholic, Stopped Drinking, Throwing Up Black Substance. Can This Be Liver Related?

Hello, My father is an alcoholic, stopped drinking all of a sudden and has not had anything to eat in a couple of days. Now my mother tells me he is throwing up a black substance. Should she take him to the emergency room? Can this be liver related?

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.Ratnakar and I am pleased to assist you.
The black substance he is throwing up could be altered blood.
An upper GI endoscopy has to be done.
He needs to be taken to ER.
I hope that answers your question.
Regards,
Dr.Ratnakar
