Hi, thank you for your question

gout is a long term disease, something like high blood pressure and diabetes, you need to control it so it does not cause acute attacks and pain to you.

you should cut down on high purine food and also cut down on alcoholic drinks, drink plenty of water.
you also need to try to decrease your weight.

hopefully the above measures will prevent further attacks of gout.

if no benefit, then you need to take long term tablets

best wishes

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Gout is of two types. Primary gout for which the cause is supposed to be genetic and secondary gout resulting due to an underlying problem (due to other diseases or drugs).

If you have primary gout, the treatment is going to be life long as there is no complete cure for primary gout. Any genetic condition can only be managed but cannot be cured.

It is preferable to keep the uric acid levels less than 6mg/mL. Medications like Febuxostat has to be taken to lower uric acid levels.

You have to use an appropriate analgesic medicine till the acute attack subsides which usually takes around 1-2 weeks.

Physiotherapy in the form of Quadriceps strengthening exercises will be helpful.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
