Acid Reflux, Gassy, On And Off Slight Pain In Lower Right Side. Possible IBS?

Hi my name is Jessica and I have acid reflux and I get very gassy, and every once in a while I have a slight pain in my lower right side and it's been going on for as long as I can remember. I don't feel sick I don't have a fever and I have a good appetite. So my question is could it be my acid reflux, and could I possibly have IBS ? Because I read that they can go hand in hand together.

Hi and thanks for the query,
it is possible it could be IBS, but however, a few things must be carefully considered before coming to this conclusion.
It might be interesting to note that, IBS is only thought of when all other organic diseases have been excluded. In this particular case, I would suggest a proper clinical and endoscopic review, with pH measurements of mannometry, to be sure that acid reflux has been properly taken care of. This is so important because, it might not be useful to start treating IBS, meanwhile the acid reflux has not been well treated, and especially in this case, could explain the symptoms experienced.
A chest X ray to exclude lung disease and an abdominal ultrasound could also be helpful.
I suggest you get reviewed by your primary care physician.
Kind regards,

Bain LE, MD.
