5 Year Old With A Cough And Fever. Reddish Eyes. Viral Infection?

I have a 5 year old with a temp ranging from 99 - 104 since Friday. He has a cough that was dry initially & now is productive. He hasn t eaten hardly anything in 4 days and is pale. His eyes are mildly red and glassy. Should I take him to Dr. They usually just say it s a virus & send me on our way. He did have flu mist in Nov 2012. Thanks.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for opting healthcaremagic.com to post your query and giving us this opportunity to clarify your doubts.
Well, I would advise you to take your son to the pediatrician especially because 104 deg F is too high to sit on it. Besides he has other systemic features like refusal to eat, pallor, eye changes and productive cough. I would also like you to check if he has some sort of a rash or any swelling in the neck. They could indicate a viral infection too, but you should still see your pediatrician. Besides its gonna be almost a week since the fever, right!!! So, its better you get him evaluated. He might need to undergo some blood tests also if his fever is persistent.
I hope I have answered your question and clarified your doubts. I will be always available in case of further queries. Take care and stay healthy.

Hi
Thanks for your query,
Your child is having fever, cough, congestion in eyes and is lethargic, which can be viral or bacterial in nature.
I suggest you to get him examined by pediatrician ,he may need some tests like CBC,Xray chest.
and in case of infection treated accordingly.
In the meantime give him paracetamol every 6 hourly till fever comes below 100F.give plenty of fluids, fruit juice, light bland diet so as to maintain hydration and built up his immunity.

Wishing your child good health.
God bless.

Pediatrician, Surgery Dr. Anand Sinha's  Response
HI
Thank you for your query
I believe that you should take your child to a doctor. He might need a course of antibiotics from what you have said. And you should definitely not neglect it. 104 is a very high temperature. Give your child sponging whenever fever rises so high. Such temperatures can produce fits in small children. So my suggestion is that you s how your child to a pediatrician right away.
Hope that helps
God bless you
