General & Family Physician, Dr. Nirmala P's Response
Hi Aimee,
Thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.
Migraines are better managed when drugs are given at prodromal stage (before the pain intensifies) or by prophylactic (preventive) drugs. Migraine is difficult to treat in its acute (severe) stage. Drugs like Paracetamol if taken when the pain is mild are very effective. But since you are getting it daily, to prevent it you can take drugs like Propranolol or Flunarizine daily. Your treating Dr will know about these drugs.
Headache due to migraine usually subsides in a week. Getting headache daily is unusual. Avoid plantains, chocolate and cakes as they contain tryptophan that produce serotonin, the substance thought to be responsible for migraine headaches.
Throbbing headache can even be due to brain aneurysm, and so to rule out other causes of head ache, you should get MRI and CT scan done as they may help in finding out the cause of your head ache.
I hope this is useful.
