Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

If you have had an urgency to pee for only a few days, then a UTI is likely and you should take a full course of antibiotics. If you do not see an improvement within 3-4 days of starting the antibiotics then you will need to let your doctor know. Sometimes there is resistance to antibiotics and in this case, another antibiotic can be tried.

Sometimes, prostate problems can cause difficulty with urination but in these cases, the urgency to pee or difficulty to control urine lasts for weeks to months. If your symptoms are present for more than a month, then tests and examinations are needed to verify the cause. Such tests would be:
- a urine analysis and urine culture (the last one will determine if there are a certain bacteria causing the symptoms and which antibiotic is effective against it)
- an abdominal ultrasound examination to check your kidneys, bladder, and prostate
- rectal examination may be needed to evaluate your prostate
- the urodynamic test is another test to evaluate incontinence (limited control on the urine)
- a neurological examination (done in the office by the doctor) will rule out neurological conditions as the cause of the problems with the urine

To conclude:
- if the urgency to pee and lack of control on urination are recent problems you will need a full course of antibiotics
- drinking plenty of fluids to wash off the urinary system is advisable as well
- if you are not better in a few days you should talk to your doctor and in this case, another antibiotic can be added or some tests can be performed (a urine culture at least)
- if you have had urinary symptoms for weeks to months a prostate problem or other structural diseases of the urinary system should be ruled out and in this case, a thorough examination and tests (as mentioned above) should be conducted.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
