Brief Answer:
Nasal bleed is due to straining while passing the stools

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

The nasal bleed is common in elderly individuals who are on blood thinners. And more common in people who strain while passing the stools.

In our body there are many weak points in the arteries which we term it as aneurysms. While straining, these aneurysms break off leading to oozing of the blood.

Similarly, in the nose there would be microaneurysms as we age. When an individual has any comorbidities such as high blood pressure, these aneurysms become more prominent. Any amount of straining during the event of exercises, passing stools or lifting heavy objects, the blood pressure increases leading to breaking of the aneurysms. In the normal individuals this would seal off immediately, but, those individuals who are on blood thinners the oozing would remain for sometime.

The remedies for this is:
1. Consult your physician to regulate the blood pressure
2. Avoid straining; if the stools are hard you would require a laxative.
3. Drink adequate amount of water
4. You can use normal saline nasal spray, to keep the nasal mucosa moist.
5. If the situation persists even after the above measures, then, you should consult an apt ENT Specialist for a thorough examination of the nose and cauterisation of the bleeder.

Hope this answers your query; revert back to me if you have any follow up queries.
