Question: my 78 year old mother had a xray guided left hip injection with lidocaine and steroid on 8/23. she was experiencing 8/10 hip pain prior to injection, but could walk with heavy use of a cane.
4 days after injection she woke up with 10/10 pain and had lost function of her left leg (injection side) in that she cant bring her foot up (pedal pushes)and must use a wheeled walker for difficult ambulation. She has to "flop" her left foot out when ambulating. also still has the pain and basically sits all day then back to bed where before she was doing adls. primary physician prescribed meloxicam 15mg daily.
not sure what to do. primary suggested nerve conduction studies and or physical therapy...mom wants to regain function and get back to her baseline prior to injection.

Brief Answer:
Nerve conduction study is necessary to evaluate nerve damage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query and here is my advice.

Those symptoms indicate sciatic nerve damage and dysfunction.

So, I agree with the opinion of your mother's primary care Doctor about the nerve conduction study and EMG.

Besides meloxicam, I think antineuralgic drugs such as pregabalin and vitamin B complex for a couple of weeks could be of help in reducing symptoms.

Physical therapy should be started after some improvement of the pain.

Discuss with a Neurologist about these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Should we seek a Neurologist visit first, then nerve conduction testing, or have the results of the testing to take to the neurologist?

Also, what disciplines could be of help. I can see physical therapy, however, mom's pain level is going to limit the effectiveness. I guess I'm asking what will the neurologist do?

Brief Answer:
Get the nerve conduction study done first.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

If it is possible, you should have the nerve conduction study done prior to Neurologist's meeting.

Also, it is advisable that physical therapy to be done after improvement of pain.

Hope this helps.

Greetings.
