Question: if a fifth metatarsal of the foot is broken and somewhat misplaced, but it's been three weeks and it's starting to set, how do you know in which cases it should be left alone and when it should be rebroken and fixed proper there is almost 0 pain

Hi there

If xray at 3 weeks show no or less healing then best to put a cast for another 3 weeks to improve the chances of healing and re-xray at 6 weeks.

If no changes then surgery may be needed.

Since there is no pain it could be that the Fracture is healing. We generally wait for 6 weeks for fracture to heal.
