Posted on Sun, 12 Jan 2020
Question: i have had a hoarse voice, sore throat and a sense of having something in my throat for a few months, slowly getting worse. i have had blood tests and throat swabs that were normal. no cough or running nose, no acid reflux.
i am waiting for an ENT appointment. i am a little concerned because my father had tonsil cancer at age 70.
i am 54, male and otherwise healthy.
does this sound like anything worrisome? i am anticipating about 3 weeks or so until i see an ENT..

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Are you having fever, difficulty in taking food, breathing difficulty, change in voice? Do you have to speak a lot in your profession. Do you smoke or take alcohol? Do you have any acid reflux frequently? There may be many causes for your symptoms. It can be any infective, inflammatory or tumour in the oral cavity, or the larynx. It cam be acute pharyngitis, chronic tonsillitis, any vocal cord polyp, cyst. It can be any fungal infection or tuberculosis of the larynx. It can be due to any spasmodic dysphonia. It can be tumor of the larynx, tonsils. But for the best. An endoscopy of the larynx known as nasopharyngolaryngoscopy or a stroboscopy is the most needed investigation. When you are visiting your ENT surgeon please have a thorough check of your tonsils and endoscopy to see the inside of the voice box. Don't get scared too much, hope for the best. For now start an antibiotic augmentin, any antiallergic tablet allegra. You can do betadine gargle. Try to have a voice rest. It will help if you are having vocal cord polyp or cyst or any other benign lesions. Get an endoscopy done as soon as possible and review with the reports or you have any quiry. Hope for the best.

my jaw does hurt as well a great deal of the day.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. It can be due to allergic pharyngitis or acid reflux. But it is always better to check the throat with the help of a endoscope. You need to consult an Ent surgeon and get a flexible endoscopy of larynx done. Get a throat swab and sent for culture and sensitivity. Do a X ray styloid process as enlarged styloid process can sometimes cause pain. Continue betadine gargle, antiallergic tablet allegra or solvin. Complete course of antibiotic. After seeing all the reports further diagnosis can be made and can be treated accordingly.
