Brief Answer:
Will need to be closed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome.
This is Dr Sameer, Cardiologist.
9mm is a big hole and will need to be closed.
Their is no need to do open chest surgery and this hole can be closed by a non invasive small procedure.
Their is no immediate emergency and you can wait and get echo done regularly (at least 6 monthly) to see if whether their is any pressure change in the heart.
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
There is a minimally invasive procedure for ASD in which we no open surgery is required. We go through the vein of the leg and through a wire we reach the heart and thus the hole. We put a occluder device through the wire into the hole and thus seal the hole.
9mm is definitely a big hole and needs closure. Candidature for the above procedure is decided after a echo done through mouth (TEE).
Their is no medicine which can close the hole. But this hole sometimes get closed with age if it is smaller.
So we generally wait for sometime before going for the procedure.
Thanks
