Brief Answer:
Screening of your partner and children at early age are recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on Ask a Doctor.

The hemoglobin electrophoresis report shows Hb A2 level of 5.4 which is above the upper limit for Hb A2.
High levels of Hb A2 along with elevated red blood cell (RBC) count, low MCV and microcytic hypochromic blood picture are suggestive of thalassemia trait or thalassemia minor.
You are not suffering from thalassemia disease but you are a carrier of one gene responsible for thalassemia.
Presence of thalassemia trait is important for future generation.
At the time of marriage, hemoglobin electrophoresis of your partner is suggested.
There should be no abnormality regarding hemoglobin variants in your partner.
Presence of any abnormality of hemoglobin variants in your partner can lead to passage of abnormal hemoglobin genes in your children.
So, at this point only screening at the time of marriage as well screening of your children at early age is recommended.

If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.

Thanks and take care
Dr Shailja Puri
