Question: hi dr, my wife 62 years old had a surgery for cancer in uterus stage IB remove of uterus and ovaries doctor said that she must take radial therapy after surgery for 5 weeks 5 days a week is it safe for her now and in the future to take this therapy and can cancer return back in the future thank yiu

In this disease, in this stage IB, usually radiation therapy is given. Should not delay more than 6 weeks from surgery.

It is quite safe and helps to prevent recurrence.

But despite all treatment, some chances of recurrence remain, maybe around 10%.

Weakness, loose motions, urinary disturbances and vaginal dryness can be there.

need to maintain nutritious diet, drink lot of fluids and doctor can give certain medications to reduce loose motions and urinary burning sensation, frequency, etc. These usually settle well after completing treatment.

New cancer can develop at radiated site, after even many years, but fortunately that is quite rare, less than 3%.

Vaginal dryness can develop after external radiation too.
