Question: hello doctor! I wanted to ask something about my almost 6 year old daughter. From 6 days she is suffering from varicella.. she had the first day fever and after all spots. Since I have another baby in the house the doctor gave me, the medicine called acyclovir. She takes it only the first day and after that since she can barely take medicine and the spots were getting better I stopped. Anyway, from yesterday she begun having blocked nose and cough which is aumenting. I read about varicella complication , should I worry and go to the doctor? Can I now continue again with the antiviral medicine? Thank you

Brief Answer:
I suggest to meet a doctor again to exclude a possible pneumoni

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in"Ask a Doctor".
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You should know that varicella is viral infection usually in children that sometimes could cause complications like viral pneumonia or encephalitis.
If your daughter has a lot of caugh and fever I suggest to meet a doctor again to exclude a possible pneumonia even if the skin elements are better now.
As well you should continue to give her acyclovir at least for 5 days.

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.
