Question: have been expereincing diarrhoae with constipation for about 5 weeks now. For most of the day I feel that I have someting stuck up my back end. Had a lot of blood tests done on liver and kidneys which were fine. I was also tested for celiac disease which was negative. I am expericing a lot of gas as well. My stool was tested and nothing found. Had a rectal exam done and nothing was found. Also doctor tested tummy and said it was soft. I am booked in for a colonscopy in a couple of weeks time. It was suggested I may have irritble bowel syndrome. However I am scared that it could be something more sinster. I have been major stress lately in looking after eldery parents which is very tough. I have also had a scan on my stomach area, gallstones were found as well as a fatty liver. I am had a scan on pelvic area a cyst was fouund on ovary with some calification. I know that all of the above conditions can cause both diarrhoea and constipation but can they cause alternativing diarrhoea and/or constipation or could it be a combination of all of them. I have lost no weight intentionally. No blood found in stool. I am perimenopause.

Brief Answer:
Can be IBS.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

Your liver and kidneys tests are normal, celiac disease negative.
Stool test and rectal exam was negative which means that there is low risk for rectal or colon cancer. The ovary cysts may cause pain and discomfort but not diarrhea and constipation.
Gallstones and fatty liver may cause diarrhea.
I think the right examinations to do now is a colonoscopy and is the right one to see if there is an organic problem or a tumor causing it.
I believe it can be irritable bowel syndrome since all tests I mentioned before are normal.
Also stress can be a factor for IBS and you say that recently you are facing a lot of stress.
Hope I have answered the question.
