It varies according to the manufacturing date which is also usually printed on a container.

The shelf life is not the important aspect because for example if medication was bought in April 2016 but the expiration date is December 2016, then it cannot be used but if the expiration date is November 2017, it is still valid.
The medication may have been bought the same time and stored for the same length of time but the expiration date is different.

The dates are stated on the medication.

In general some medications can be used up to 6 months past the expiration date but this is usually not advised since the effectiveness or side effects cannot be predicted.

If the expiration date is not clearly seen then it is best not to use the medication
