Question: celexa questions- I have been taking 20mg of celexa for a couple years with no side effects. I increased my dosage per my doctor last night to 30mg. I have a fear of vomiting and am wondering if I will experience side effects and if I do, when? I haven’t experienced any yet so am I in the clear?

Brief Answer:
Vomiting is possible but unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. Nausea, and less commonly vomiting, are known side effects of Celexa. Vomiting occurs in about 4% of patients, and higher doses may make that more likely. So overall I would say it is rare. However, while it is reassuring that you haven't had any side effects after 1 day of the increased dose, it may take up to a couple weeks to know if you will have any side effects or not. If you do start having nausea, I would suggest talking with your doctor as soon as possible and they may consider putting you back on the 20mg, and hopefully that would prevent the nausea from getting too bad or progressing to actual vomiting. But I would expect that since you did well on 20mg, that 30mg will not have any issues for you.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Brief Answer:
Within a few weeks

Detailed Answer:
If you were going to develop nausea, I would expect it to happen within the first couple of weeks. After that, it would be less likely, though still possible anytime.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.
