Will A Doctor Examine Me Just Before Delivery If I Have Not Visited Any Doctors During My Pregnancy?

Question: I am 36 weeks pregnant and due to living situations and insurance, haven't seen a doctor since I was 15 weeks pregnant. I'm due XXXXXXX first and finally moved into my new apartment and am trying to find a doctor out in Reston. If i haven't seen a doctor the entire time I've been pregnant is there any doctor that will see me before I give birth. I've continued taking prenatal. What should I do?

Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for the query.

As you had got your regular ante natal checkups done till 15 weeks, it is by this time most of the organ development takes place in a fetus. Routine Blood and urine investigations along with Abdominal Ultrasound are needed to rule out any congenital malformation and other maternal health issues by this time of pregnancy and hope these were done.

In the later months of pregnancy, adequate growth and development of the baby and general maternal health are needed to be kept under watch. It is during this time complications like high blood pressure and diabetes may develop.

Since you did not get any antenatal checkups after 15 weeks, you should get it examined at the earliest. A doctor should be able to see you even at 36 weeks of pregnancy. You can visit the walk in antenatal clinics and get registered over there or if you are not having any insurance and are new to the place then you can ask for help from voluntary organizations or your neighbors or friends of that place to get you registered to an ante natal clinic. You might have to get Abdominal Ultrasound done again to check on the development of the baby.

Hope this answers your query. In case of any doubts I am available for the follow ups.

Wishing you good health.

Hello XXXXXXX

A hospital and ante natal centre should register and attend to you at the earliest because no pregnant woman can be denied the right to have a safe delivery which poses a minimal hazard to maternal as well as fetal health. As mentioned earlier, you can take the help of friends and NGO's to contact ante natal centres. You can also consult a mid wife and get an antenatal check up done.

Hopefully there should be no problem but now yiu need to be evaluated for preeclampsia, sexually transmitted disease, and other problems like fetal or placental position defects.

Wishing you good health and a safe delivery.
