Why Have I Had An Ear Ache And Trouble Swallowing For Over Five Months?

default
Posted on Sun, 11 Apr 2021
Question: Hi,

I've had an ear ache and trouble swallowing for 5 months. My doctor said it's just allergies and to take Flonaise nasal spray. Doesn't help much. Any advice?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Earache and difficulty swallowing 5 months

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

5 months of earache and dysphagia with little or no improvement with antihistamines and Flonaise warrants further assessment. You need to consult an ENT specialist through your GP or take a second opinion if you are already consulting one. The history, examination including an otoscopic exam would provide your ENT specialist the necessary information to start you on empiric therapy rather than advising any investigations , initially. Only , diabetes needs to be ruled out and your doctor may advise HBA1c and fasting/ random blood sugar tests in this regard. Otitis externa and chronic otitis media are the likely diagnosis and treatment can be started once the cause is ascertained.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
