Posted on Fri, 17 Dec 2021
Question: My wife has been experiencing musical hallucinations for about three years. She had already been treated by five psychiatrists, but the hallucinations were intensifying. Over the past month, the situation has become critical, as she rests only during a night's sleep. It drives her to desperation.
How to cure it or maybe you can recommend a doctor in the United States, a specialist in this field. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
She should be given low dose antipsychotic drug.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Her MRI brain and EEG are normal so we can rule out any organic lesion in this case. Considering her age and symptoms she might be suffering from Depression with psychotic symptoms though more detailed evaluation is needed to make proper diagnosis.

She is currently on Diazepam, Donepezil and Mirtazapine. Mirtazapine is an antidepressant and is right drug for her symptoms. Donepezil is for forgetfulness and Diazepam is for anxiety.

Can you tell me why Haloperidol was discontinued?

Haloperidol is an antipsychotic drug and this should help her in controlling the hallucinatory voices. If she was not tolerating Haloperidol then other drugs like Olanzapine, Risperidone, Aripiprazole etc can be kept in choices.

For best psychiatrists in USA you can go through "DOCTORS" section of the website. You can find good psychiatrists according to location.

Thanks. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.
