Question: I become bloated after eating almost anything. I have tested positive for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and have a hiatal hernia. I saw my gastro and he said to follow a FODMAP diet which I did, but i don't think that helps. Can you suggest anything?

Brief Answer:
Medical therapy plus life style change.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

See due to SIBO food for digestion in our intestines is acted upon by a large number of harmful bacteria and pathogen which causes production of large amount of gases due to incomplete fermentation of carbohydrates. These gases accumulate in intestines and cause bloating and belching. Initially just a diet change wont help rather proper medication has to be taken along with it.

Take a 14 days course of Rifaxamin 550 mg once daily to kill bad bacteria.
(Prescription needed)
Along with it take a probiotic like VSL#3 once daily.
For bloating take omeprazole 40 mg twice daily initially for 14 days.
Activated charcoal tab can be taken to absorb gas.

If you want to take natural therapy consider-
Curd and yoghurt are good of probiotics. Probiotics help to replete the depleted flora of gut hence help in proper digestion of food.

Thanks.
