Which Sport Can Be Pursued After ACL Injury Recovery?

Posted on Mon, 16 Nov 2015
Question: MY daughter tore her ACL twice playing soccer. She is 16 years old. She has had it surgically repaired both times. We do not want her to play soccer again. What sports can she pursue that have lower risk of ACL tears. Do not say swimming. She hates to swim. thank you

Brief Answer:
Consider indoor sports.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
If the ACL tear has already been repaired twice then it is best for her to concentrate on indoor sports like badminton or lawn tennis. She can also consider playing table tennis. Such games are associated with lesser strain on the knee and thus lesser chances of injuries. She can also do regular knee strengthening exercises to help any future damage.
I hope this answers your query.

She is a very active athlete and used to playing at a competitive level so badmitton or table tennis will likely not help her burn the energy. How about court tennis or field hockey? Seems the fast acceleration and then halting adds strain to the ACL.
Also do you recommend a brace once she returns to play? She will be training 12 months before we will let her play another sport.

Brief Answer:
Elastic knee brace will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Court tennis or field hockey are good options. Sudden halting will add to the strain on ACL. She can use an elastic brace for a better knee support. 12 months training should be sufficient for her knee ligaments to regain the lost strength. Just be careful to do adequate warm up exercises before the play.
Hope my answer is helpful.
