Question: I was diagnosed with a UTI this morning. I was given NitroFurantion Mono and am wondering if there is anything I should avoid while on this medication. It doesn't say on the label. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Information.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Usually the pharmacist will give a patient education information sheet when dispensing a medication, or include the information insert in the packaging. But if you were given nothing, here is some information that might help:

1. It can interact with other medications. If you are on any other meds, please let me know their names and I will look up if they interact with nitrofurantoin.

2. You should take it with food or milk. Don't take it without eating something.

3. Nitrofurantoin should be avoided if you have liver or kidney disease or diabetes. Caution if you have anemia or vitamin B deficiencies.

4. Avoid antacids because they can interfere with the absorption of nitrofurantoin.

5. If you have it in liquid form, be sure to shake it.

6. If you are prone to getting diarrhea or bowel upsets when on antibiotics, consider taking a probiotic such as Florajen3 or Megafood Megaflora. Both are refrigerated. Take them more than an hour before or more than 2 hours after the antibiotic if possible.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

The email says the doctor responded but couldn't send it because it kept getting bounced back. Then I was supposed to download some app which doesn't tell you whether it's free or not. Please, I just want my answer. After all I paid the $15.00 for the "quick" answer.

So my question was about if I should avoid and foods/liquids while on this medication.
