Which Is The Best Option Of Treatment For Cataract While Having Astigmatism?
Question: Hello
My Opthalmologist has examined me and recommends cataract surgery. He has given me several options. First is the Medicare option, no extra cost, cataracts removed, and I will continue to need bifocals as I do now, for seeing near. Second is using a laser to do the same surgery, which has more precision and adds $2,000 per eye. Third is using a laser with an improved lense to correct far, middle and possibly also near vision. No guarantee on the near vision, as I may need drug store glasses for reading. Fourth is using a laser and a “symphony “ lense to improve far, middle and close sight. Third and fourth options add $3,000 per eye. I am 85, have astigmatism and think I should just do the base Medicare option, and continue to wear bifocals as I have for a great many years. Am I missing something selecting this option? Cost is a factor but it is not for me a deciding factor.

Brief Answer:
Go with the first option!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Other options are good for younger persons who often don't like wearing lenses. If you are comfortable with lenses, there is no reason not to take the less expensive option as it adds no further inconvenience to you. The ultimate goal is to improve your vision and wither procedure would. Every other added stuff is for esthetics and not improved vision.
I hope this helps and guides. I wish you well.
