What Would Cause Redness And Swelling At The FTP Vaccine Injection Site And Fever In An Infant?
Question: Hi,
My daughter is 8 weeks old. She recently had her Dtp vaccination done. Doctor said he has given a combo vaccine Easysix(dtp and polio) in one dose on left thigh. After vaccination as a reaction she had redness and swelling at the injection site and fever and crying when moving the leg. after six days a boil appeared on the injection site and later the other day the boil busted and pus oozed out. the injection site is still hard. Doctor said to apply heat pack on the site and apply an ointment hindula. also he has advised antibiotic sporidex drops (0.6ml -0.6ml-0.6ml) for 5 days. I need to get a second opinion on this. is it advisable to give antibiotics at this age

Hi... I understand your concern.
Normally even I to follow antibiotic stewardship and do not recommend antibiotics until and unless they are absolutely recommended and necessary.
But here you are telling that there is a swollen thigh and there is pus discharge from the site which means that there is a possibility of an underlying abscess and pus collection.
We cannot just take this swelling as a injection site swelling as there is pus production there.
If you can upload me an image of the pus discharging site then I will see and get back to you to guide you better.

I have seen the image, this looks like very small localised skin pustule.
I do not think this will warrant systemic antibiotics orally.
I suggest that there is no need to use Sporidex and local application of Mupirocin ointment three times a day for a period of three to five days would suffice.
There will not be absolutely any developmental issues as a side effects of antibiotic usage and so you need not be worried about this.

Hi...Hirudal cream contains - Mucopolysaccharide Polysulfate.
It might have a good effect but this requires topical antibiotic as I had suggested Mupirocin.
