Question: TERRIBLE SITUATION - ALL WITHIN A MONTH OR LESS. DAUGHTERS BEST FRIEND FOR A DECADE WENT TO FLA/GA FOR SPRING BREAK, BUT BASICALLY WAS GOING TO VISIT HER PARENTS IN AL. JESS, THE ILL ONE, STARTED GETTING A MIGRANE WHICH WAS NOT UNCOMMON. THEY WENT TO A WALK IN AND GOT MEDS. A WEEK LATER SHE WAS MUCH WORSE. THEY HAD TAKEN HER TO 3 WALKIN CLINICS AND NOW WAS AT AN ER IN FL. OVER 5-10 DAYS SHE BECAME COMPLETLY DISPONDENT, UNABLE TO WALK OR TALK AND WAS LOSING HER EYESIGHT. THE DRS DID A SPINAL PUNCH ON WED,OF THIS WEEK AT A HOSPITAL IN FL I BELIEVE, AND HAD HOPED TO HAVE BIOPOSY INFO BACK BY NOW. WITH NO VISABLE SUCCESS AT ALL, THEY TRANSFERRED HER TO A HOSPITAL IN XXXXXXX MID WEEK. THAT IS WHERE SHE GOT A 'SPINAL PUNCH'. STILL DISPONDONDENT, UNABLE TO WALK, SPEAK ETC. ALMOST COMA LIKE. THE DOCTORS THOUGHT FOR A WHILE IT COULD BE SPINAL MENGITIS. NOW THEY WERE NOT SURE, BUT WERE FOR SURE THAT WHATEVER SHE HAD WAS AFFECTING HER BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD. JUST TODAY SHE MOVED HER LEFT FOOT A LITTLE. ---- XXXXXXX MOTHER OF FORMER BEST FRIEND OF XXXX.

Brief Answer:
Further investigations such MRI and biopsy may be needed.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

With the data you provided, meningitis, encephalitis, or central nervous system infections in general, are most probable conditions that may cause such issues.

However, it is necessary to provide the spinal tap results. Some more information, such if there was fever too during this period, medicines used, etc.

In my opinion, imaging studies such MRI of brain and spinal cord with and without contrast are necessary to get a correct understanding of the diagnosis and to provide valuable information if biopsy is necessary and where to take it.

Hope you found the answer helpful.
