What Tests Are Needed To Resolve Reflux Feeding Issue?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2021
Question: Hello doctor, I had contacted previously for my daughter about reflux feeding issue. She was rejecting the bottles.

She still rejects the bottles while awake but takes some during drowsy state or sleep.

I consulted another doctor and he suspected cow's milk protein allergy. He ordered poo test and result came today and shows inflammation of bowel. The reading of faecal calprotectin is 75 ug/gFec (normal range is <50). She said cow's milk free formula milk is necessary. She also started Omeprazole together with Renitidine (which my baby is on already).

I am worried again by this readings. Is this something to worry about or is it related to milk allergy only?

Do you think any more tests are needed?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
The inflammation should go away if cow milk is avoided completely

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Incidentally cow milk protein allergy (CMPA) is often encountered in children (and even adults). Not much needs to be done about it but strict avoidance of cow milk and milk products is advisable. As an alternative soy milk and other substitutes can be given but if breast milk is available, you need to look no further. An early weaning would also be advisable to be tried. You need not worry about the readings. The readings just indicate that the body is not taking cow milk well and its avoidance is all you need. I do not think any other tests to be needed.

Feel free to write back.
