What Is The Survival Rate In A Person With Low Grade Tectal Plate Glioma?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Mar 2015
Question: Hello I am 30 years old and have been diagnosed with a low grade tectal plate glioma. I know there is a chance this could be stable and not cause problems but I have been looking for average survival rates for these type of tumours and getting a very mixed response from 7-8 years average survival to 12 years and beyond. Can you tell me what the average rate of survival is? Is this tumour life threatening or life limiting? Or neither?

Brief Answer:
Low grade tectal glioma has 100% overall survival

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your query.

I referred few literature to find prognosis of this tumour.

In a book named Primary Central Nervous Systems Tumors: pathogenesis and therapy by XXXXXXX D Nordon, and some review articles, I found the following information.

These may grow in size to cause hydrocephalus by expanding into periaqueductal space. The overall survival is almost 100% and relief of hydrocephalus is the only intervention required.

Thus my understanding is that they are non-malignant. So they are neither life threatening or life limiting.

Factors that may affect prognosis are:
-age>40y
-tumor size>6cm
-midline shift
-neurological deficit

Hope it helps.
