What Is The Recovery Time Of Synovectomy?
Question: My doctor has been treating my right knee for traumatic bursitis. I have had 3 drainages and cortisone injections. However, it still fills with fluid and swells to the size of a golfball. No pain, just this nagging lump. My doctor has indicated he may have to incise and remove the bursa, which I am comfortable with. I would like to know what recovery time would be for this. It's the superficial bursa just below the kneecap. I can handle pain, but find it hard to be sedatory for very long. :)

Removal of partial or all the synovial membrane of a joint is known as synovectomy. Recovery depends upon type of procedure performed i.e classic arthrotomy or arthroscopic.
If your surgeon perform arthroscopic synovectomy then the results would be better and early i.e you will be alright with in 4-5 weeks. All you need is doing quadriceps strengthening exercises as uploaded on you-tube and have balanced diet.

I believe he is not doing it arthroscopically. He mentioned an incision. My concern is not missing too much work. I have a desk job. Will I be able to walk on it soon after?

If he is not doing it arthroscopically, even then it is ok. All that you need is to follow his instruction before and after operation and must do quadriceps strengthening exercises.
Pain will be alright with in 24 hrs but you will go to work only after permission of your operating doctor. It usually take about 4-5weeks for becoming perfectly alright. you can walk with in 7 days.
