What Is The Dosage Of Amoxicillin For A Tooth Extraction?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Dec 2016
Question: I had my dental checkup and I am required to take 4 amoxicillin 1 hour before the appointment because I had hip replacement. I now need a tooth extraction and will need to take 4 amoxicillin again prior to the procedure. I think taking this antibiotic is unnecessary and I am concerned side effects such as C- Diff is possible. Please advise.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain your question is a bit unclear..

I want to know that are you taking 4 Amoxicillin for your hip replacement surgery daily?

If yes , then do you mean that if you take 4 Amoxicillin before dental appointment then it will be total 8?

Also what is the concentration of each capsule like is it 250 mg, 500 mg etc..

Is your tooth that needs extraction is infected or decayed?

Do you have any medical problems or are you on any medications?

Please revert back with answers..

Regards..

Dr Honey, sorry for the confusion. I had Hip replacement 11 years ago. I take four Amoxicillin, 500 MG each, every time I get a dental exam, that includes a teeth cleaning. My latest dental exam showed a cracked tooth, I think it is number 15, and the doctor said it could not hold another filling. It did have a root canal on this tooth several years ago. My concern is, I feel taking the antibiotics is not necessary and want to know if you feel I should take antibiotics before these dental procedures.

Hi..
Welcome back..

As per your complain it is appropriate to take a loading dose of antibiotic before any invasive dental treatment but is not needed to be taken for simple scaling procedure or filling of tooth..

But it depends on the medical conditions if you have any..
So please tell me that do you have any medical problems like Diabetes or any other medical problems or are you on any medication..

Dr Honey, I have no medical condition, other than IBS. I have been told, because I had hip replacement that any bleeding in the mouth could get in the blood stream and cause infection. Seems extreme to me.

Brief Answer:
You can take antibiotics, no issues..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome back..

Yes it is true that if there is severe infection in mouth and you have any invasive treatment done like extraction then it can cause infection ..

But not a commonly seen condition with extraction..

However taking antibiotics is being on a safer side and a single dose will very less rarely cause C.Diff..

So do not worry and proceed further as you are safe..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
