Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

I will try to explain it to you the best I can.

Onycholysis is a nail condition which is characterized by the separation of a fingernail or toenail from its nail bed.
Every factor that can affect the nail bed can cause this separation. You can think of it as something that develops under the nail and causes the nail to lift up,loosing its connection with the nail bed.
For example ,infections (fungal or bacterial) that affect the nail bed cause inflammation under the nail and this may cause the separation of these structures.

The process of separation usually starts at the tip of the nail and progresses back but is may start in the proximal part of the nail and extends to the free edge. This is seen most often in psoriasis of the nails ( a skin disease).

The most common causes for Onycholysis:
-Repetitive trauma, e.g. daily tapping of long fingernails on a keyboard or counter
- manicure tools pushing beneath the nail to clear dirt
-Skin disease (psoriasis )
-Infections (Fungal infection of the nail ,bacterial ).
-Some systemic disease like Anemia,Diabetes Mellitus ,Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism ,etc
-Some drugs :Antibiotics ,Oral contraceptives,Anti-cancerous treatments, etc.

Every one of these causes affect in one way or another the bed nail ,increasing the distance between the nail and bed nail and gradually causing their separation.

It is important to diagnose the cause of Onycholysis because the treatment will depend upon the right cause.

Hope it was of help.
