Question: My son is 4 years old. He had a ultra sound as part of his genetic testing. They called me yesterday saying he needed to see a urologist bc of nephyomegaly of the right kidney. What could this be? he has no signs of anything.

Brief Answer:
Too early to say.

Detailed Answer:
Good Day and thank you for being with Healthcare Magic!

Nephromegaly or enlargement of the right kidney could be due to a lot of causes and it is too early to say. It would all depend on the actual result of the ultrasound. it would also help to get a ct scan of the abdomen with IV contrast to have a better picture of the kidney enlargement.

Common causes would be urine refluxing from the bladder to the kidneys which may cause swelling of the kidney. Other causes would be ureteropelvic junction kinking and obstruction. This will be seen in the ct scan and is usually corrected by surgery to remove the obstructing tissue with very good outcomes.

Like I said earlier it is too early to say what is the problem and we just have to wait for the official ultrasound. Pls let me know what will be the result so I can help you better understand.

Would a normal kidney infection causes swelling like this? would they be able to tell in the ultra sound if it was caused from just a kidney infection? would they send us to a urologist just for a kidney infection

Brief Answer:
Yes infection can cause enlargement.

Detailed Answer:
Yes an infection of the kidney would also appear as enlarged kidney but this usually accompanied by signs and symptoms like abdominal pain and pus in the urine.

It would depend how enlarged is enlarged in the ultrasound whether a ct scan would be needed to check further.
