Brief Answer:
Diabetes is the most common cause of excessive urination

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. There could be many causes for the symptoms you describe, also known as polyuria. The most common cause is high blood sugars, which then your kidneys filter into the urine, and the excess sugar draws more water into the urine, which can cause dehydration. This usually starts to happen when the blood sugar goes above 200 mg/dL.

Other causes excess sodium (usually from IV fluids), muscle breakdown (sometimes from steroid use), and diabetes insipidus, which is caused by excess secretion of a hormone that causes urination, or a problem with the kidneys recognizing signals from the brain to stop urinating so much.

Whatever the cause, this is certainly concerning, and I would recommend you see your doctor to determine what the cause is, so that it can be treated and you can maintain a good fluid balance.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
