Posted on Wed, 4 Nov 2015
Question: I have lumbar xray showing 8 mm retro listhesis. What are the "grade levels" for this 8 mm? MyDr had suggested muscle relaxer and pain pill. I haven't yet started treatment but I just wonder if most patients get better in 1-6 months is true and would cortisone injections would be better for me? Or quicker? I have SLE, osteoarthritis with horrible knees and lots of bone spurs....2 hand joints also have bone growing, paiful red hot. Negative STD and neg RA. No current sore throat old or tick bites etc.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

Considering your SLE background,it is important to mention that a lupus flare can trigger these bone, joint and spine problems.
First and the foremost, control of SLE disease activity is crucial for managing these problems.Steroids therapy,as a part of SLE treatment protocol, should be of a definite help.Cortisone injections can also be given if symptoms don't improve.

Some of the other medicines which may help in spine related pain are-
Antineuralgics-Pregabalin,Amitriptyline,Nortriptyline,
Muscle relaxants
Methylcobalamin and calcium/vitamin D supplementation.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.
