Question: My LDL is 223, but my HDL is 61, and my triglycerides are 200. Doesn't the high level of "good" cholesterol and normal level of triglycerides sort of "balance out" the high "bad" cholesterol?

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that the levels of total cholesterol are not a reliable indicator of your cardio vascular risk.

You should know that the most important would be total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio. This is a direct indicator of your cardiovascular risk. In females levels of this ratio below 5 are considered to be related to a low cardiovascular risk, and no therapy is needed.

In your case the calculated ratio would be around 4.98, which means that your cardiovascular risk related to your blood lipid profile is low.

So there is nothing to worry about!

Nevertheless, as these values are borderline, I would recommend taking more omega 3 rich food in your diet (nuts, olive oil, fish, etc) and perform a lot of physical activity. You should know that a lot of physical activity (aerobics) helps reduce LDL cholesterol.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!

Greetings!

Dr. Iliri
