Question: I am a 55 yr old female. I quit smoking cigarettes one year ago this month. I am using a Vape e cig currently, but have weaned down to using 6mg/Nicotine juice. My recent Lipid profile was drawn and I was not fasting. These were the resulting levels. Cholesterol was 215, Triglycerides were 109, HDL was 73, LDL was 120. My doctor recomends I start a statin. The only other physical problems I have is RA. I take Methotrexate and recently started Embrel for this condition. Do you think I should start the statin drug?

Brief Answer:
Statins are not needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your query.

According to the recent recommendations by the XXXXXXX heart association, you do not need lipid lowering therapy. Only your total cholesterol is only borderline high, other values being in normal range.

You should implement lifestyle changes.
In diet, please exclude high calorie foods like milk products (butter, cheese, sweets, chocolates, etc. Add more fiber to your diet as in fruits, salads, etc.
Daily exercise of atleast 30 min is also needed. It can include gym, walk, yoga, swimming, cycling etc.

Hope it helps
