Question: My son just received a phone call about his blood test results. He has been running a low grade fever for a couple of weeks in the evening and the blood tests show that his red cell count is low, T count is low and he has reduced liver function. The Dr at first thought that it was a stomach Ulser. He has an appointment tomorrow to run more tests, but I am very worried right now. Could this be something minor?

Brief Answer:
Please upload the reports or manually type in the values.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I would need you mention how old your son is and whether he is sexually active (if applicable). I would also need you to specify the reports. A low red cell count indicates anemia and can be treated with iron supplements. I am not sure why one would test specifically for T cells unless prior tests indicate something. I would be able to comment further once you share the reports in detail.

I would wait for you to respond.

My son is 28 and is sexually active as he is married and they are trying to have their second child. He went to the Dr. a couple of weeks ago because he had been feeling poorly and running a fever for 4 or 5 days. This is when he found that he was anemic. The D.r prescribed him amoxicillin and stated that he had an infection (sinus). As his fever (low-grade) continued, he went to the Dr. again for more tests. That is when he found through blood test that he had low T and the liver function low too. He was called with the results today and is going for more tests tomorrow.

Brief Answer:
Give him steam inhalation. Share the detailed test reports.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for clarifying. Although amoxycillin has been prescribed, the sinuses have very poor blood supply and therefore not much would reach there. Ask him to take steam inhalation. Water in form of vapor will reach deep inside and would help by diluting the mucus and would thus provide relief.

The other symptoms could be due to a simple viral infection. I would also need the specifics of the liver function test. However, after he gets the reports of further testing he can get back to me with the reports and I will try to guide him further.

Dr Saha,

My son had an Ultra Sound today and they said the liver looks good, but the spleen is slightly enlarged and the pancreas looks small. They asked my son if he is under a lot of stress. (We are Postal Employees so yes, stress is rampant) They have sent the results to be read and I believe they said they will contact him on Friday with that. They also did more blood tests. He has an appointment on Friday morning to go over the results.

Brief Answer:
Let the other reports come.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for sharing the details. Fever with splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) can happen due to a number of reasons. I would wait for the other reports to arrive such that I would have the scope to comment definitively.
