What Does This Torch Test Report Indicate?

Question: Hello Dr.,

We are planning to adopt a baby girl of ~ 1.5 months, and the doctor had advised us for TORCH test. We got this test done and the report shows all IgM values as Negative, whereas, most of the IgG values are high (as below):

Toxoplasma IgG < 3 IU/mL
Toxoplasma IgM < 3 AU/mL
Rubella IgG = 33.10 IU/mL
Rubella IgM < 10 AU/mL
Cytomegalovirus IgG = 35.70 U/mL
Cytomegalovirus IgM < 5 U/mL
Herpes Simplex Virus 1 + 2 - IgG = 15.80 Index
Herpes Simplex Virus 1 + 2 - IgM < 0.500 Index

By looking at above, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, and Herpes Simplex Virus values for IgG seems to be above the normal range as per the report. The baby girl to be adopted is 1.5 months old.

Can you please advise if these IgG values will have an impact on her and if there is any concern in proceeding with the adoption.

Please adivce asap as we have to start the legal process based on it.

This means does the baby's biological mother had those infections

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... sorry for the delay in answering.I understand your concern.

This report means that the baby does not have any active infection as such. But the baby's biological mother had those infections where IgG is positive and has transferred the antibodies to the baby.

This means that the baby is immune to those infections. Nothing to worry about this.

But to be hundred percent sure, what I suggest is that you postpone the adoption process by 1 month and repeat the same test after 1 month and see for the report.

I suggest that you do the testing in the same Lab which you have already done.

hello Dr. thanks very much for the response. we can try postponing the adoption but it may be a challenge with the existing parents of the child. not sure if it's worth taking a risk to continue with adoption now...

Hi...as far as the current report is concerned the baby doesn't have any problem. Usually we need to see the baby and clinically examine and take a call on it.

But as far as the report is concerned, I do not see any problem in adopting the baby.

thank you Dr. we had shown the baby to a Dr here and attached is the physical examination report of the same.Baby had some cough and congestion so Dr. had prescribed some medicines which are visible in the attached in the report. However, this physical examination was done before the blood test report. please let us know if you can advice anything further based on this. Thanks a lot.. Hi....the physical examination rules out congenital anomalies as per the prescription.

We need to know -

1. Growth of the baby - if the baby has got adequate weight gain or not?

2. Head circumference and the percentile it is falling into....to check whether it is low or high?

3. Neurological examination of the baby.

4. To check if there is any liver or spleen enlargement by clinical examination.
