Question: Father in law got report back and wanted some help.
He got CT scan on chest and showed he has mild cardiomegaly; a 4.4 mm left renal stone and 2 pulmonary nodules measuring up to 5mm. The doctor called the nodules cysts. He also has high blood pressure which he takes meds for.
The cardio called and wanted to see him immediately. Is there anything to worry?

Brief Answer:
Mild cardiomegaly due to hypertension.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Mild cardiomegaly at a age of 80 years is a normal finding. However an enlarged heart may have several causes. But it's usually the result of high blood pressure or coronary artery disease.

Due to cardiomegaly heart may not pump blood effectively, which can precipitate congestive heart failure.

A 2d echocardiogram should be done to see the functioning of heart. This test will measure the size ,thickness and pumping action of the heart.A tread mill stress test would be done to rule out coronary artery disease,If both tests are normal;then there is no need to worry.

As per your question there is no need to worry from cardiac side right now.

Advice
Go for above mentioned investigations.

Brief Answer:
Non cancerous nodules most likely!

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

There are two main types of pulmonary nodules: malignant (cancerous) and benign (noncancerous). Over 90% of pulmonary nodules that are smaller than two centimeters (around 3/4 inch) in diameter are benign. As the size of nodule is just 5 mm most likely they are benign, However a consult with respiratory medicine specialist should be done to discuss the further options (Whether to go for biopsy of nodules or not)

If tread mill test is normal,Most likely mild cardiomegaly is because of hypertension, I don't think there is any need to worry from cardiac point of view.

Thank you!
