Question: what does it mean when an CT examination has confirmed areas of sclerosis and residual lucencies occupying the posterior aspects of the right 2nd-8th ribs in the costivertebral location and the left 3rd-8th ribs in the costovertebral location.

Brief Answer:
Sclerosis indicates increased bone density.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

I have gone through your other query as well.Probably CT findings are related to your baby.
CT findings indicate that there are ares of sclerosis with few lucencies in posterior aspects of the right 2nd-8th ribs and the left 3rd-8th ribs in the costovertebral(attachment between ribs and vertebra)location.

Sclerosis appears bright in CT scan(due to high density bone) and it may be seen in many conditions like healing stage of bone fracture, chronic low grade infection, associated with many tumour, haematological causes like myelofibrosis and sickle cell disease, metabolic bone disorders etc.
There are also areas of few lucencies(dark due to decreased bone density) in CT scan).

I suggest proper bone survey to rule out metabolic disorder, hematological causes etc.Your baby need proper clinical examination and further investigations.
No doubt ,it may be due to healing stage of multiple rib fracture, but all possibilities should be ruled out.

Hope I have answered your question.

Hello XXXXXXX

Increase in bone density(sclerosis)and decrease in density at the same time(lucency)is commonly seen in many pathological conditions. In fact,it is characteristic of many tumours. There is simultaneously formation and destruction of bones.

In your baby's case, lucency is due to bony gap due to rib fracture whereas sclerosis(increased bone density)is due to active healing process.Sclerosis is due to formation of callus(new bone formation at the fracture site).

Hello XXXXXXX

We have discussed various causes of scleorosis and lucency.
These patient also have many different clinical features which indicate towards pathology.
I presume abnormal clinical features are not present in your baby,so various other possibilities are not mentioned and investigated.

From CT findings,it appears your baby's findings are limited to various stages of rib fracture.
