Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: I had a small flat black (size of a pin head) mole removed. The path report came back compound melanocytic nevus. The pathology was done by a dermopathologist. My question is... Under a microscope are the cells way different then melanoma or are they close and could it have been melanoma?

Brief Answer:
Its a benign lesion

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Compound melanocytic nevus is a completely benign lesion of melanocytes in the skin. The microscopic features of melanoma are markedly different from compound melanocytic nevus. It could not have been melanoma according to the reports that you have described. The only problem with it is cosmetic appearance. It can be removed in a single sitting under local anesthesia via electro cautery, punch excision or LASER.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
