What Does The Hip MRI Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I had an MRI of L hip in Sept that showed an extensive Labral tear from 10-3 oclock I believe it is an anterior tear. I have had severe hip pain, groin pain for over a year. Was told at first that pain was coming from my lower back. I had 2 previous back surgeries. Will a cortisone injection into my hip give the Drs the information they need to determine if it is coming from hip or back or both?? Can an extensive labral tear be treated in a way other than opiate pain pills. I do not want to take those so that I can just continue to walk unless I have to.

Brief Answer:
Hip injection will be helpful in diagnosis and therapeutic ways also.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.

You can do MRI spine to see for any disc bulge leading to pain.
If MRI spine is normal then reason of pain is mostly from hip only.
It is less likely that labral tear of hip will lead to sudden onset of back pain.

Hip injection will be helpful in diagnosis and therapeutic ways also.
It is not much painful so do not worry.
Till time take opioids and cartilage protecting medication like glucosamine sulphate.
You can take analgesic like Diclofenac instead of opioid.
Hip arthroscopic labral repair will be more useful for permanent relief.

For hip cartilage injury, joint flexion, extension and rotation exercises will help.
Physiotherapist will help you better to learn more exercises in proper protocol.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Yes there is chance of pain relief by arthroscopic labral repair.

But there should not be associated cartilage damage or joint arthritis.
