Question: Diabetology question
Dear Doctor,
I request you to kindly go through my case patiently and advise me.
I am told that i have diabetes in the year 2011. Ever since i am taking 250 mg glycomet twice a day.
The laboratory tests results
Date Fasting Post lunch Hb A1 c
14.6.12 122 161 6.6
26.8.12 105 113 --
24.1.13 122 131 6.9
21.7.13 119 135 6.5
16.10.13 119 -- 6.4
15.2.14 100 113 6.5
2.5.14 119 --- ---
31.7.14 112 122 6.5
Now after going through above results, do you say that really i am diabetic. Why because, i always in doubt that i am not a diabetic and i was unncessarily prescribed the medicine. I am now 72 year old. I never have any symptoms. I feel that i should reduce the medicine to 125 mg twice a day instead of 250 mg twice a day. since i do not have abnormal values. Can i reduce this dosage for a week and see whether the values stands at this level or does it increase further. On hearing from you i wish to go accordingly. kindly advise. If you require any further info from me, i shall furnish to you.

Brief Answer:
Reduce dose of medication.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir, I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.

Dear Sir,
After going through your clear values since the beginning, the sugar levels here and there are slightly crossing the normal values (Fasting 110), but that is a very minimal increase. .

The prescribing of medicine is no wrong at all. Your sugar levels are under control as you are on correct medication.

If you want to see by stopping medication, you surely try by first reducing it to 125 mg. (half tablet of 250 mg. twice a day.) after discussing with your treating doctor and check sugar levels every week for 1 month and see whether the sugar levels are under control. If they are normal you can continue that. But if they bounce back, then need to change back to 250 mg.

But stopping completely is not advised. For that HbA1c values should constantly be under 6.0.

Hope this guides you. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.
Wishing you good health.

Dear Doctor,
I thank you very much for your advise. After reducing the dosage from 250 mg to 125 mg twice a day for a period of one month, can i check my sugar levels with one touch ultra meter? if so do i have to add + 10 to the resultant level or not necessary?
You did not tell me whether i am diabetic or not? please clarify.

Brief Answer:
Lab check is advised.

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, welcome back.

In your case, better check the sugar level in the lab for accuracy. Because some meters are accurate some vary, the variation need not be only +10. So, better is lab in case like yours where accuracy more important. Once the dose is set, you can have check in the ultrameter.

Sir, your sugar levels show that you are diabetic, but mild which is under control with with very low dosage of medicine.

Thank you Sir.
