What Does The Following Cytology Result Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Please make sense of my cytology results. I have benign squamous and urothelial cells with occasional atypical cells showing large round hyperchromatic nuclei most suggestive of polyoma virus. No definite cytologic evidence of malignancy is seen. Is this something to be concerned about? Thankyou.

Brief Answer:
Your findings may indicate viral infection and may need follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your findings may indicate viral infection. It is most likely due to polyoma virus.
It is important to know your symptoms and reason for investigation.
Generally polyoma virus is shed in immunocompromised patients or change in immunity status.Normally it may be asymptomatic present in latent(hidden) stage in urinary bladder wall, ureter or renal pelvis.
Your cytology findings are typical of polyoma virus due to presence of hyperchromatic nuclei.
There are no definite evidence of malignancy, however I suggest follow up tests due to presence of atypical cells.
