Question: Mom is 91. Takes HTN meds and Occassionally usually at night or when she wakes up she will get wheezing and some SOB. Not during day.She has Ventolin as a rescue inhaler. Allergy doc wants her to use QVAR as a daily anti asthma inhaler to combat wheezing.? The literature says that renal function is an issue as well as osteoporosis when taking it. She has one kidney and osteoporosis. Heart doc thinks wheezing is related to CHF and salt/ fluid issues.Regardless she has Ventolin for rescue inhaler and it works fine. Shes concerned about QVAR or Flovent daily due to kidney issues and effect of long term use on kidney and on osteoporosis. When she took steroids by mouth once she was really jittery and face swelled up . What do you think kidney risk is

Brief Answer:
No need to worry for kidney risk with inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.

I can understand your concern.

No need to worry for kidney damage with inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).

ICS are devoid of systemic side effects like osteoporosis, kidney damage, skin damage, diabetes etc.

ICS acts directly on the lungs and it is proven anti inflammatory drugs for asthma. In fact it is first line drug in XXXXXXX (international guidelines for asthma) guidelines for asthma control.

It is a controller drug. With its regular use, need of rescuer drug (Ventorlin) will reduce and her night time wheezing also subside.

So better to start ICS without fear of kidney damage or osteoporosis.

Hope I have solved your query.

I will be happy to help you further.

Wishing good health to your mother.
Thanks.
